Hospitals in Beijing for foreigners

Beijing has some of China's best-known public hospitals. Several run an international medical department (often called IMS) with English-speaking staff, separate appointment lines and, in some cases, direct billing with commercial insurers. The city government publishes an English medical guide for foreigners, which is the main source for this page.^[1]

Before your first visit

Call or message the international department first. Ask which doctor or department fits your case, the earliest date, and whether they take your insurance for direct billing.
Book through the channel they name. Most use a hospital app or WeChat mini program; some take phone or email bookings.
Bring your passport and records. See the checklist below.
Show the Chinese address to your taxi driver. Each hospital page has the address in Chinese.

General checklist

Your passport (the same one you entered China with) — hospitals register patients by passport
Previous medical records, scans and test results, ideally with an English summary
A list of medicines you take (generic names and doses)
Your insurance card and policy number, if you want direct billing — ask the hospital first whether your insurer is on its list
A payment method: international bank card, or Alipay / WeChat Pay linked to your card

Getting to Beijing without a visa

Citizens of many countries can enter visa-free for up to 30 days, or use 240-hour visa-free transit when flying on to a third country. Beijing is part of the Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei transit area: you may stay anywhere in Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei.^[2] Check your nationality or read the 240-hour transit guide.
